Farming Injustice in the Jordan Valley
With its rich water resources and its climate The Jordan Valley is the main agricultural region in the West Bank and could serve as a bread basket to a future Palestinian state.
However Israeli settlers now control and exploit most its land and water resources. Settlers have also established modern farms that then generate huge volumes of produce for export.
The main agricultural products grown in settlements are dates, grapes, peppers and fresh herbs.
The Jordan Valley is also an area where settlement expansion has made life especially difficult for Palestinian communities. Israeli settlers make up 13% of the population of the Jordan Valley yet control 86% of the land.
The Israeli government has also said it may increase the allocation of land available to settlers in the Jordan Valley by 130% and their water allocation by 20%
